It is a traditional South Indian condiment originating from the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, India. It’s a flavorful and versatile chutney typically served as an accompaniment to various South Indian breakfast dishes like idli, dosa, pongal, and vadai.

INGREDIENTS:

To Make Thanni Chutney

  • Oil – 2 TSP
  • Onion – 1 Cup (Roughly Chopped)
  • Garlic – 6 Cloves
  • Green Chilli – 2 No’s
  • Roasted Chana Dal – 1/2 Cup
  • Water – As per your need

For Tempering

  • Oil – 2 TSP
  • Urad Dal – 1 TSP
  • Mustard Seeds – 1 TSP
  • Asafoetida Powder – 1/4 TSP
  • Onion – 1/4 Cup (Finely Chopped)
  • Red Chilli – 2 No’s
  • Curry Leaves – Few
  • Prepared Thanni Chutney
  • Water – As per your need
  • Salt – As per your taste

Preparation Method

Today’s recipe is delicious and taste recipe that is Madurai Thanni Chutney and so let’s gets started.

Step 1 (Madurai Thanni Chutney)

  1. Take a kadai and add Oil 2 TSP and add Onion 1 Cup (Roughly Chopped).
  2. Then add Garlic 6 Cloves and add Green Chilli 2 No’s and fry it well for few minutes.
  3. After it cool down move to a blender jar and add Roasted Chana Dal 1/2 Cup and add Water As per your need and blend it well to fine and smooth paste.
  4. Take a kadai and add Oil 2 TSP and add Urad Dal 1 TSP and add Mustard Seeds 1 TSP and add Asafoetida Powder 1/4 TSP.
  5. And add Onion 1/4 Cup (Finely Chopped) and add Red Chilli 2 No’s and add few Curry Leaves and mix it well.
  6. Add the Prepared Thanni Chutney and add Water as per your need and add Salt as per your taste and mix it well.
  7. Prepare Idly and move it to a serving plate and add the Madurai Thanni Chutney on the top of it.
  8. Madurai Thanni Chutney with Idly is ready to serve.
