Malai Methi Matar” is a delicious Indian dish that combines green peas (Matar) with fenugreek leaves (Methi) and a rich cream base (Malai). Here’s a simple recipe for Malai Methi Matar:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup fenugreek leaves (fresh or frozen), chopped
  • 1/2 cup cream (malai)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, pureed
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Preparation Method

Step 1 (Malai Methi Matar)

If using fresh fenugreek leaves, clean them thoroughly, remove the stems, and chop finely. If using frozen peas, thaw them.

Cooking:
Heat oil or ghee in a pan. Then add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and add finely chopped onion and saute till it turn golden brown.

Add Ginger-Garlic Paste:
Then add 1 teaspoon of ginger-garlic paste and saute for a minute or till the raw smell disappears.

Add Spices:
Add 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder and then add 1 teaspoon of coriander powder and add 1/2 teaspoon of red chilli powder and check for seasoning by adding salt and mix it well and cook for a couple of minutes.


Add Tomato Puree:
Add the tomatoes pure and continue cooking for few more minutes.

Step 2 (Malai Methi Matar)

Add Peas and Fenugreek Leaves:
Add green peas and chopped fenugreek leaves. Mix well and cook for 5-7 minutes until the peas are tender.

Add Cream:
Reduce the heat to low and add cream (Malai) and then mix it well for few more minutes.

Finish with Garam Masala:
Add garam masala and mix it in. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Garnish and Serve:
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve Malai Methi Matar hot with naan or rice. This dish is known for its rich and creamy texture, combined with the unique flavour of fenugreek leaves.
