Chilli Fish Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

For the Fish:

  • 1 pound (450g) white fish fillets, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, for coating
  • Oil for frying (vegetable oil works well)

For the Chilli Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3-4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, minced
  • 2-3 green chillies (adjust to your preferred spice level), finely chopped
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon tomato ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon red chilli sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (cornstarch slurry)
  • Chopped green onions for garnish

Preparation Method

Step 1 (Chilli Fish)

Take the white fish fillets and cut into bite-sized pieces and Season it by adding salt and black pepper. Then, lightly coat them in all-purpose flour, shaking off any excess.

Take a pan add oil and heat it by keeping the flame on medium and Fry the fish pieces until they are golden brown and crispy, which should take about 2-3 minutes per side. Then move fish from the pan to kitchen towel or tissue paper to remove the excess oil and keep it aside.

In the same pan, remove excess oil, leaving about 2 tablespoons for the sauce. Heat the pan over medium-high heat.

Add minced garlic, ginger, and chopped green chillies. Stir-fry for about a minute until they become fragrant.

Add chopped onions and sliced bell pepper. Stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes until they become tender and slightly caramelized.

Step 2 (Chilli Fish)


In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, tomato ketchup, red chilli sauce, sugar, and water. Pour this mixture into the pan with the vegetables and bring it to a simmer.

Once the sauce is simmering, slowly add the cornstarch slurry while stirring continuously. This will thicken the sauce. Adjust the thickness by adding more water or cornstarch slurry as needed.

Add the fried fish pieces to the sauce and toss them gently to coat with the chilli sauce. Allow them to simmer for a couple of minutes, so the fish absorbs the flavors.

Garnish with chopped green onions, and your chilli fish is ready to be served.
