INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/4 cup split yellow moong dal (lentils)

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 inch piece of ginger, finely chopped
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1-2 green chillies, finely chopped (optional)
  • 10-12 curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 tablespoon cashews (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Water

Preparation Method

Step 1 (Ven Pongal)

  • Wash the rice and lentils together. Cook them in a pressure cooker or a pot with about 4 cups of water until soft and mushy.
  • In a separate pan, heat ghee. Add cumin seeds, black pepper, chopped ginger, asafoetida, green chillies (if using), and curry leaves. Sauté until the spices release their aroma.
  • Add cashews to the pan and sauté until they turn golden brown. Add the cooked rice and lentils to the pan. Mix well with the spices.
  • Add salt to taste and continue to cook on low heat, stirring to combine everything evenly. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed, and let it simmer for a few more minutes until the flavors meld.
