INGREDIENTS:

For the Bread Chat:

  • 4-6 slices of bread
  • 1 cup boiled and diced potatoes
  • 1/2 cup boiled chickpeas
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped cucumber
  • Green chillies – 2 No’s (Finely Chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon chat masala
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)

For the Chutneys:

Tamarind Chutney:

  • 1/2 cup tamarind pulp
  • 1/4 cup dates, seedless (optional for sweetness)
  • 1/4 cup jaggery (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

Green Chutney:

  • 1 cup fresh coriander leaves
  • 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves
  • Green chillies – 2 No’s (Finely Chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as needed

Preparation Method

Step 1 (Bread Chat)

Prepare the Chutneys:

For the Tamarind Chutney, combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and cook over low heat until the jaggery dissolves and the chutney thickens. Cool and store in the refrigerator.
For the Green Chutney, blend all the ingredients together in a blender until smooth.  Then add water as per your need and keep it a side.

Prepare the Bread:

Cut the bread slices into bite-sized pieces or use cookie cutters to create interesting shapes. Heat oil in a pan, add a pinch of asafoetida, and toast the bread pieces until they turn crispy and golden brown and keep it a side.

Step 2 (Bread Chat)

Assemble the Bread Chat:

In a large mixing bowl, combine the boiled potatoes, boiled chickpeas, chopped onions, tomatoes, cucumber, and green chillies.
Then add Salt to taste and add 1/2 teaspoon roasted cumin powder then add 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder and add 1/2 teaspoon chat masala and mix it well.

 Final Assembly:

Move the toasted bread into the serving plate.
Spoon the prepared potato and chickpea mixture over the bread.
Drizzle both the tamarind chutney and green chutney over the mixture.
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and any additional toppings you like, such as sev (crispy chickpea noodles) or pomegranate seeds.
